1-WHAT IS MATTER?

Everthing in the universe is made of matter.
Table, window, pen, water, even the air you breath in is matter.

The human body is also matter.

This is New York city, everything here in the picture is matter. If you could zoom in with a super microscope you would see everything is composed by atoms.

 ZOOM IN

Matter can exist in different states and it has different properties.

2-THE STATES OF MATTER

  • Watch the following videos to discover the states and properties of matter. Enjoy!

SOLIDS

-Particles are closely packed in fixed positions.

-They are rigid.
-They cannot be squashed or compresed.   cannot = can't
-They have a fixed shape.
-They have a fixed volume.
-They cannot flow.

LIQUIDS

-Particles are closely packed but not as much as solids.

-They are not rigid.  are not = aren't
-They cannot be squashed or compresed.
-They haven't a fixed shape (they take the shape of the container they are in)
-They have a fixed volume.
-They can flow.

GASES

-Particles are not closely packed.

-They are not rigid.
-They can be squashed or compresed.
-They haven't a fixed shape.
-They haven't a fixed volume (they completely fill the container they are in).
-They can flow.

EXTRA KNOWLEDGE

Matter is made of very small particles. These particles are called atoms. Learn more and get some extra points.

EXTRA KNOWLEDGE

Many scientists now agree there is a fourth state of matter called PLASMA.
99% of the known Universe is made up of plasma.
The state of matter plasma is a gas that has been energized.

Examples of plasma on Earth:
-Neon light

-Fluorescent light

-Plasma ball

Examples of plasma in space:
-The sun
-Galaxies

3-CHANGES IN MATTER

When you burn a piece of wood, you get ash. You can't get the wood back.

When you heat chocolate, it melts. When it cools, you get solid chocolate again.

             Burn
                                                                                                   Heat

                                                                                                                                                          Cool

                Melt

*Cool can be an adjective or a verb:

     - My coffee is finally cool (fresc) - adjective

-The air conditioned cools the air. - verb

Don't confuse cool with cold(fred)- Put your coat on. It's cold outside - adjective
